ON THE CASE

“What have they told you?” Lola asked, thinking this was the safest route.

Talking started all around the table, everyone at once.

Tilly, let out a deafening whistle. “Let me, now, we have been told that a body has been found. We were then escorted here and other people to different rooms and asked to not talk to people about it and to be patient. We were told that we would be interviewed in time.”

“Did they take your phones?” Lola asked.

“No, but they took them from some people,” Tilly said. “I think people who knew Carmine… I guess it was her that you found?”

Lola nodded. “I can’t tell you much more, just that Sassy sniffied…” Lola couldn’t believe she had just used the Frenchie’s word for sniffing. What would people think? “… Out the body and led us to her. It was well hidden.”

“Was it awful?” Alice asked, there was moisture in her eyes. “Such a sad end for Carmine.”

“She looked very peaceful,” Lola said, though she knew this meant nothing. She hoped that it would ease Alice’s pain a little.

“Do they have any suspects?” Sam asked. “Maybe I could help.”

Lola liked the fact that he was so keen but he was still doing his training and had some time to go before he would be a police officer. Even if he was, an outside force would not trust him. “I doubt they will want our help, they think it is Scott.”

“Well, the way you said that, you don’t.” Tilly’s voice was a little harsh, her shoulders were back, her head high and her expression wary. She had not been impressed with Scott, that much was sure. “Surely, the man was dumped and he went straight to those girls!”

“It could be him but I don’t think he had… how can I put it… that much skin in the game.”

“I agree,” Tanya said. “He was just along for the ride and he knew it was going to end, whether by him or her, I don’t think he cared.”

“The murder weapon was his,” Linc said.

Lola wanted to kick him, her friends probably already knew this but she was trying not to say too much.

“Oh, that knife you found!” Alice’s mouth was open wide just as Sam came back with a tray of hot drinks, a big jug of orange juice, a bottle of champagne, glasses, and a plate of chocolates. He handed Tilly the money back. “It was on the house so I thought I’d get plenty to keep us going. Who knows how long we will be here.”
